Become a Coach/Volunteer

FYHA is an all volunteer organization. We need as many volunteers as possible!

It is essential for all youth hockey coaches to complete SafeSport training and undergo background checks to ensure a safe, respectful, and trustworthy environment for young athletes. These requirements help protect players from abuse, misconduct, and inappropriate behavior by equipping coaches with the knowledge to recognize and respond to concerning situations.

Background checks further reinforce the safety of the program by ensuring that individuals with a history of harmful behavior are not placed in positions of authority or influence. Together, SafeSport and background screening uphold the integrity of the sport, build trust with families, and prioritize the well-being and development of every player on and off the ice.

In order to be an approved volunteer, please complete the following steps:

  1. Register for USA Hockey Membership
  2. Complete USA Hockey Background Check
  3. Complete SafeSport Training
  4. Register as FYHA Coach/Volunteer

USA Hockey Membership

Volunteers will need to obtain a USA Hockey number and register as a "Volunteer". A new USA Hockey number is needed every year.

If you are signing up as a VOLUNTEER, select the Manager/Volunteer option. There is no charge for this registration. It does NOT allow on-ice participation. Sign up as a volunteer if you're a team manager, locker room monitor, penalty box attendant, etc.

If you are signing up as a COACH, select the Player/Coach option. You must sign up as a COACH if you plan to be on the ice during stick time, practices, or any other on-ice activity. Even if you are not formally coaching, being on the ice with players requires this membership, as USA Hockey categorizes anyone on the ice as a coach for liability and insurance purposes.

USA Hockey background check

All volunteers must complete a background check. This is eligible for reimbursement by FYHA. Background checks are required every two years.

safesport training

Volunteers are required to complete SafeSport training and certification. SafeSport training is good for one year from the date of certification and requires recertification every year.

Become a USA hockey coach

USA Hockey and the Coaching Education Program require both certification and registration to be eligible to coach. Registration is done online on a yearly basis. Certification is also required. You may also be required to complete age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching.

Sign Up in DIBS

FYHA will pay $25 per session for the first two coach volunteers to register in DIBS to be on the ice with the players for summer pond hockey and stick time.
